With such expenses why would they just give away 3-year subscriptions for free + give you additional money? On top of that, there's a myriad of other expenses they have to pay for like management, marketing etc. Maintaining servers and infrastructure for VPNs costs money, and when you are an organisation like NordVPN (its parent organisation also owns Surfshark) that provides servers in upwards of 50 different countries, with a conservative estimate of at least 50 nodes in each country, that's 2500 different IP addresses, and possibly 2500 different servers that they have to pay for. When people receive a service, they usually expect to pay for it.
